More about artists

Maja Mannila (FIN)

Finnish singer, pianist, and composer Maja Mannila is a vibrant and multifaceted voice in today’s Scandinavian jazz, soul, and R’n’B scene. Her international career took off when her trio performed as the rhythm section in Iiro Rantala’s project Flock, touring Central Europe in 2021–2022 and earning widespread recognition. Coming from a family of musicians, Maja has a deep musical intuition. She values freedom, improvisation, and playfulness—elements that bring authenticity and freshness to her music. Maja Mannila Trio features two of Finland’s most promising young talents: drummer Severi Sorjonen and bassist Johannes Granroth. Together they create a dynamic foundation for Maja’s English-language originals, blending soulful vocals with contemporary grooves. In addition to her trio, Maja has performed as a soloist with the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra and the Kaunas Big Band. In 2023, her trio represented Finland at the Nordic Jazz Comets showcase and has since performed in Germany, Sweden, the UK, Slovenia, Estonia, and in Japan in late 2024. Her debut album Up & Down (2022) received glowing reviews in the Finnish media. The follow-up, Seasons, was released in November 2023, cementing her position as one of the most exciting new voices in Finnish jazz. “The Helsinki-based trio is led by Maja – a singer, composer and pianist with a truly unique tone and incredible vocal control. I relaxed into a deck chair and let their original music wash over me—a mix of old-school soul, snappy funk bass lines, and intimate instrumental moments, punctuated by Maja’s whistling and drifting rhythms that stopped passers-by in their tracks.” — Georgie Harold-Moss, Manchester Jazz Festival 2024

Villu Veski & Tiit Kalluste (EST)

“Nordic Tango – emotional landscapes in tango rhythm” Estonian jazz legends Villu Veski (saxophone) and Tiit Kalluste (accordion) have created a unique musical universe where the lyrical beauty of the Nordic nature meets the passionate soul of tango. Their music tells stories of silence and storms, forests and seas, light and shadow — capturing a vast emotional landscape in a single melody. The duo gracefully blends classical European tango, jazz improvisation, and elements of contemporary chamber music. The concert program includes influences from tango nuevo as well as from their evocative island-inspired repertoire — music shaped by the sounds, solitude, and sense of freedom found on Estonia’s remote northern isles. The result is a deeply moving musical experience that transports the listener to a timeless and borderless emotional space. This is music that needs no translation — only an open heart. The music of Villu Veski and Tiit Kalluste is not merely a tribute to the great masters of tango, but also a distinctive artistic expression, seamlessly blending tango’s fiery rhythms with the freedom of improvisation. Their performance in Milan promises to be an unforgettable evening, where tango’s melancholy and passion intertwine with Nordic sensitivity and jazz-inspired freedom.
